Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What do we need to bring to the class?
A: The only thing you need to bring is your imagination!
Please keep it in mind that comfortable pants are handy when sitting close up to the wheel. For ladies - Long hair should be tied back and trimmed fingernails are also helpful.
Q: What is the size of the class?
A: We strictly limit the number of students to ensure the quality of our classes. Most classes will have 2-4 students and we only allow a maximum number of 6 students in each class.
Q: Who are the teachers?
A: Our teachers have rich experience in teaching who also majored in ceramic design for their bachelor degree. They are very friendly and will guide you through this wonderful ceramic making journey step by step.
We also open Master Classes occasionally for the students who want to advance their ceramic making skills and create some incredible artwork.
Q: How messy will it be?
A: It depends. You will be playing with mud with your bare hands to create something incredible, so obviously you won't be as neat and tidy as if you were sitting in the office! However, we will provide you with aprons and disposable shoe covers to protect your clothes from the splashing clay.
Q: Can we bring our ceramic work home after the class?
A: Yes. However, please keep in mind if you only want to try one class, you will end up with a few wheel-thrown pieces of pottery, which will be soft and wet and can’t really be used for anything.
To finish your pots, take them home and use them, we suggest you attend at least three classes. You will learn the technique of trimming in the second class and the art of glazing and final firing in the third class. Please refer to the Course Page for more details.
Q: How long will you keep my ceramic artwork?
A: Initially we will look after your ceramic work for up to 4 weeks. Most of the people come back in the second week for a second class before the pieces get too dry for trimming. Please note after 4 weeks the uncollected pieces will be recycled.
You may want to discuss with us for a solution if you don't think you can come back within 4 weeks.
Q: How long is the firing process?
A: It takes about a day. The kiln temperature is set to climb gradually to minimise cracks on the ceramics. It usually takes 7-12 hours to reach the desired firing temperature and another 7-12 hours to cool down.
Q: I have a 3-year-old baby girl, can I bring her to the classes?
A: You are more than welcome to bring your children with you to enjoy this experience. However, the minimum age for attending our classes is 8.
Q: I have some experience in making ceramics, can I become a member and use your equipment and studio?
A: Of course you can!
Become an Auart member and you can pay for a session (minimum of 2 hours wheel machine usage) to create whatever you want. You will need to purchase the clay and firing if you don't bring your own. However, all other equipment, tools, brushes, glazes will be available for your use by free of charge.
Our lifetime membership fee is only $60.
